Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Maiden Address
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
