Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no comment on this. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed more than $630 million (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
